Ukranian Crisis
The following are links and information regarding the current events surrounding Russia's invasion of the Ukraine. Here you will find sources that give you background information, as well as ways you can help during this time of conflict.
Short Condensed Summary from information out thereRelations between Russia and the Ukraine has been strained from as far back as the 1700s when Russia was ruled by a monarch. Then, in the early 1900s the Ukraine tried to gain their independence through fighting the then Soviet Union, after a loss they became one of the approximately 20 countries controlled by Soviet Russia.
In the 1930s when Stalin was the head of the Soviet Union much of Ukrainian's natural resources and goods were confiscated, leading to famine and death for many throughout the country. After the fall of the Berlin wall in 1989, Ukraine declared it's independence in 1991.
Since the Ukraine gained it's independence it has developed into a democratic government. The current invasion by Russian forces is not the first. Russia attempted in 2014 to regain control of the Ukraine, but failed. As of February 28, 2022 the country of Ukraine has applied for membership into the European Union and has called for support from other nations to aid in stopping the Russian invasion in order to keep Ukrainian independence and democracy.
This is a very simplified summary of a long, complicated history of the relationship between Russia and the Ukraine, as well as the history of the Ukraine as a country. I pulled the information from many of the resources from the links above.
